PPO vs. DMO: What’s the Difference?

Two common types of dental plans are PPOs and DMO/DHMO plans. While both are designed to help patients access dental care, they generally work differently.

A PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization, uses a network of participating dentists and may provide some benefits for out-of-network care. Your out-of-pocket costs can be higher when you visit an out-of-network provider.

A DMO or DHMO generally uses a network-based structure in which patients select or are assigned to a participating dentist. Covered services and copayments depend on the individual plan.

When comparing plans, consider the network, premiums, deductibles, copayments, annual maximums, covered procedures, and out-of-network benefits.

The most important step is understanding your specific plan before choosing a dentist or beginning treatment.
