What Does “100% Covered” Really Mean?

Seeing “100% coverage” on a dental insurance plan can sound simple, but it does not necessarily mean you will pay nothing.

Dental plans calculate benefits according to policy terms, including deductibles, allowable fees, network status, limitations, and annual maximums.

A plan may state that a category of preventive services is covered at 100% of the plan’s allowed amount. That does not necessarily mean the insurance company will pay 100% of whatever fee a dentist charges.

Before treatment, ask your insurance company about the specific procedure, your remaining deductible, annual maximum, network status, and estimated benefit.

Understanding what “100% covered” means under your specific plan can help you better understand your potential financial responsibility.
